Alhambra High’s Kylee Perez still has three years of high school softball left but has already made her college choice.
The incoming sophomore shortstop gave an oral commitment to UCLA on Monday, picking the Bruins over a handful of other Pac-12 programs.
“It was the best fit for me,” Perez said. “I chose UCLA because of the academics and athletic tradition. Also, the coaches were exactly what I was looking for. I’ve had UCLA in mind for a while. I took a visit there and it was definitely a fit for me.”
Perez made a big impression in her first year of high school softball, batting .628 for the North Coast Section Division III champion Bulldogs. She was the Diablo Foothill Athletic League’s MVP, and as Alhambra’s leadoff hitter, she had nine homers, 29 RBIs, 41 runs and 35 stolen bases.
UCLA won the NCAA title in 2010 and has won 12 national crowns since 1982.
Oral commitments are nonbinding, and Perez can’t sign a letter of intent until her senior year.
