Garcia Goes 3-for-3 as Softball Falls to Utah
April 13,Â
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sophomore second baseman Ya Garcia stayed in the zone with three hits and senior Lea Cavestany added two more as the Oregon State softball team dropped an 11-2 decision to Utah at the OSU Softball Complex on Saturday. The Utes (18-22-1) scored runs in each of its first four at-bats.
Garcia singled in all three of her plate appearances, giving her four multi-hit games in her past five outings. In those five games, Garcia is hitting .643 (9-for-14) with two RBIs and four runs scored. She also leads the team with a .366 batting average and .459 on-base percentage this season.
After falling behind 8-0 behind a pair of Kate Dickman home runs, the Beavers (25-15) broke through in their half of the fourth. Senior Ashley Sanchez led off the inning with a bunt single. She is now hitting .538 in her past five games. After a fielder’s choice replaced Sanchez with freshman Natalie Hampton at first, Cavestany tripled her home to put the Beavers on the board. It is Cavestany’s first triple of the season and first since her freshman season in 2010.
Garcia kick started the OSU fifth inning after two outs with a single and her eighth stolen base of the season. Sophomore Dani Gilmore plated her with a run-scoring single up the middle.

Track
Jmaun Charles (Fr) of Amador Valley set personal bests in the 100m and 200m. He ran 11.21 and 22.57. This is the second time he has pr’ed at 100m this season. Given he’s a 400m runner his sprint times bode well for a excellent 400m time soon.
Sara Herron (So) of San Ramon Valley had her first individual race since a foot injury back in Febraury. She won the 100m in a time of 12.75. A solid start considering being laid off for some time. It still beats her last season opener of over 13 seconds for 100m.
David Griffith (So) of San Ramon Valley won the 400m in a time of 50.78 then came back to win 300IH in 40.88. Now that’s a hardcore double.
Alyssa Rodriguez (Sr) of California High won the 100m in a time of 12.94 in a dual meet against Livermore. The senior will go off to play college soccer in Louisiana after this season.
Alex Huggins (Jr) of Dublin dropped his personal best by over half a second in the 200m sprint, dropping from 24.26 to 23.40. This is only his second time ever running. Primarily a baseball player I think he’s making an excellent transition.
