Football: Ed Achziger Dublin High Quarterback CC Times Athlete of the Week

Congratulations to Ed Achziger. The second year starting quarterback and member of the Dublin high track team is leading his team to a 2-0 start. Ed is a great competitor and its great to see him get some notice. What I like even more is his main offensive weapons are his track teammates. The same guys who won the schools first conference championship in track last season are taking their winning ways to the gridiron. Guess where the Dublin track team trains?

THE STAT LINE: Achziger led the Gaels (2-0) to a 53-6 nonleague rout of visiting Galt, completing 8 of 11 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran 9 yards for a score and ran for a two-point conversion. Achziger’s effort was highlighted by touchdown strikes of 85, 62 and 45 yards.

This will be a break out season for the overlooked Achzinger.

Soccer: Claire Winter commits to UCLA

Congrats to Claire Winter of Acalanes High. She committed this week to the Bruins soccer squad. She currently plays midfielder for the Lamorinda soccer club.  GS trained for over a year now shes works on rehabbing a nagging knee injury and short burst multi-directional movements. Perfect for being a DI mid-fielder.

Static Stretching Benefits Occur after Workout Activity

When to stretch still seems to be a common question from athletes and parents.  At Gamespeed we start with a dynamic warmup  using semi -ballistic full range movements to prepare the body for intense activity. Static stretching is done during the workout as needed but generally reserved for post workout cool down.

Some recent findings done by Duane Knusdon a professor for Human Performance at Texas State  validates our process. He doesn’t speak of “in workout” static stretching but does advise the post workout aspect. Based on his research he sets some helpful stretching recommendations that I think are solid guidelines. Most of you who know me, know I don’t deal in absolutes there’s always more  than one road to doing things but it gives a great start:

  1. Frequency: Static stretch should be performed a minimum three times per week. Preferably daily after vigorous activity. On off days I like to see either an early morning or bed time stretch session.
  2. Intensity: The appropriate intensity is to slowly stretch and hold the elongated muscle groups at low force levels. In other words don’t move into the stretch too fast  and don’t […]

Mitch Kranson: Rivals.com article

Another great article on Mitch. Nice mention on Gamespeed too. Nice lookin out Mitch! Four years and counting. With Krnason and a whole host of other GS athletes on the bears campus in baseball, track, football  and softball I hope they get the Caldecott finished soon for my commute.

Bears net third commitment of 2012 class

BERKELEY — The California baseball team netted its third commitment of the 2012 class early Monday evening, when one of the best hitters in northern California walked into head coach David Esquer’s office and exclaimed proudly: “I want to be a Golden Bear.” Following a tour led by hitting coach Tony Arnerich, Mitchell Kranson

joined his summer teammate and longtime friend Max Dutto as two of the first three members of the 2012 recruiting class for the Bears, with the third being Lafayette (Calif.) Acalanes outfielder Grant Diede, who pulled the trigger on August 4.

“I kind of had an idea the whole day that I was going to make this decision, and it was just, I felt like I really connected with coach Arnerich today,” Kranson said. “Today was actually the first day where I actually […]

Baseball: Mitchell Krnason Commits to CAl

One of the hardest working young men in baseball that I know is Mitchell Kranson. A somewhat quiet and humble young man lets his bat do the talking. And Oh yeah! It speaks often and loudly. So much so CAL and many others came knocking. A GS athlete for four years and counting he is in the mold of some of the areas great hitters like De La Salle alum Chris Carter and San Ramon’s James Darnell both major leaguers. I’m glad I’ll have the opportunity to continue to work with and watch this exceptional young man in his collegiate career.  He joins other GS athletes Max Dutto and Grant Diede as incoming freshmen next year.  They will join GS alum Darrell Matthews who is a sophomore.

De La Salle infielder Mitchell Kranson is among the best hitters, if not the best, in the class of 2012. He helped lead the Spartans to the NCS Division I finals as a junior and after playing against top competition throughout the summer, he ended his recruitment on Monday night by staying home in the Pac-12. The 5-foot-10, 190 pound Kranson verbally committed to the Cal coaching staff on Monday night […]
