Alhambra High shortstop Kylee Perez orally commits to UCLA softball after just her freshman season

Kylee has had an incredible season. Coming off knee surgery in mid November she came to Gamespeed to do some post rehab work to regain her movement along with her speed and agility. After progressing well with our program she went on to have a spectacular season as the DFAL league MVP. Her early commitment reminds me of GS athlete Cheyenne Cordes the California Gatorade athlete of the year who as a freshman verbally committed to CAL and will be headed there this September.

Alhambra High’s Kylee Perez still has three years of high school softball left but has already made her college choice.

The incoming sophomore shortstop gave an oral commitment to UCLA on Monday, picking the Bruins over a handful of other Pac-12 programs.

“It was the best fit for me,” Perez said. “I chose UCLA because of the academics and athletic tradition. Also, the coaches were exactly what I was looking for. I’ve had UCLA in mind for a while. I took a visit there and it was definitely a fit for me.”

Perez made a big impression in her first year of high school softball, batting […]

Carl Steward ‘In Our Backyard’: Masters sprinter Aaron Thigpen practices what he preaches

By Carl Steward

Oakland Tribune columnist

When you run a sports performance training center, it always helps to practice what you preach. With that in mind, Aaron Thigpen’s best advertisement for his company, Gamespeed, is himself.

At 46, Thigpen is arguably the fastest man in the world for his age, even though he was edged at the tape in the 45-49 age group 100-meter final by Italy’s Mauro Graziano at last week’s World Masters Athletics Championships in Sacramento.

Thigpen had an explanation for getting run down at the finish line. Because of nagging Achilles tendon and hamstring issues, he wasn’t able to train for 10 weeks and essentially went into the World Masters 100 cold. Yet he still was the fastest American at 11.38 seconds — well off a 10.94 that he ran in March before his injuries — and was an eyelash from winning the gold.

“Losing that bit of training time took just enough fitness off me where I was rusty,” he said. “I got to about 90-95 meters in that 100 after two other days of prelim sprinting, and I […]

Nick Candau Selected to u16 & u18 Junior national Water Polo Teams

San Ramon Valley athlete Nick Candau has been selected to two USA Waterpolo teams. He made both the u16 and the older u18 group. A force in the water Nick was one of the Wolves leading scorers this year. He has also played internationally just as recently as last summer in Italy. He is also catching the eye of DI programs such as Pepperdine and UCLA. Nick comes to Gamespeed for an intense “Dryland” program designed to help him in the water. The program targets leg strength, core, shoulders and explosiveness. .

Hockey: Ethan Stibich Stars in Carmen Starr Tourney

Dynamo Ethan Stibich plays for Wild 2000. In the Carmen Starr AAA hockey tournament last month his performance ranked  #2 in his division in overall stats. He had 2 assists and 7 goals in just 5 games. His performance  sandwiched him in between the #1 (8 g/3 a) and #3 (6 g/ 1 a) players who happen to play for  the top two teams in California, so he was in good company.

Ethan (11years old) has been involved in a customized “Dryland” program designed specifically for the demands of Hockey.  He does leg strength and power workouts for speed and acceleration on the ice, core rotation for passes and shots and impact training to handle collisions.

A special shout out to his little bro “Matty” who is another little dynamo!

GS Athletes Sweep the Diamonds Gatorade State Player of the Year Cheyenne Cordes captures Softball joins Stephenson of baseball

“Baby its a “G” thing”. (Snoop-Dog)

GS athletes Cheyenne Cordes of Rodriguez and Robert Stephenson of Alhambra take both the Softball and Baseball sports categories. Stephenson was awarded the honor last week now we are alerted to Cheyennes award. Both move on to the National award process. Ive got my fingers crossed.

Here’s a excert from the Gatorade site:

The 5-foot-4 senior shortstop led the Mustangs (28-3) to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship this past season. Cordes batted .652 with 12 home runs, 18 doubles, 64 runs scored, 66 RBI and 32 stolen bases, committing just one error in the field. A member of the 2010-11 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team that won a gold medal at the 18-Under Pan American Championship in Colombia in August, 2010, she also led the Lady Magic to first place at the ASA/USA Girls’ 16-and-under Class-A Fastpitch National Championship in 2008.

Cordes has maintained an unweighted 3.63 GPA in the classroom. She has volunteered locally as part of a fundraising campaign to benefit breast cancer research and as a youth softball coach.

Getting the most out of a Sports Camp

Getting the most out of a Sports Camp

Posted on June 7, 2011 at 11:17am

Alright, its that time of year. Sports camps of all types will be going on.  Here’s a few tips athletes and parent’s should know to get the most out of the experience. As an instructor of numerous camps over the years here’s some tips from an instructors perspective.

  1. Research your camp thoroughly. Know things like: age range, skill level, number of participant’s, coach to athlete ratio, level of expertise . All of these factor into the level of fun   and quality of instruction.Your athlete should be a “realistic” fit to get the most out of the experience.
  2. Know the cancellation or absentee policy. Things do come up (weather, sickness) and you want to be up to speed on where you stand once you’ve put your money down.

  3. Be equipped properly.  Make sure you have the appropriate attire, footwear etc. Improper footwear on the wrong surface can lead to injuries.  Check the weather to have the right clothing or change of clothing readily available.

  4. Nutrition: Eat properly before the activity, have something to […]

Stephenson goes to Reds in 1st round of major league draft.

Congratulations to Robert and also to Joe Ross a former Gamespeed athlete (2007-09). Nice to see Bay area prospects working hard and going high in the draft.  They follow in the footsteps of GS alum Chris Gruler. Couple of years since Ive worked with Joe but I know he is a hard worker and is a great talent.

Bishop O’Dowd’s Joe Ross, Alhambra’s Robert Stephenson selected in the first round of the MLB draft

Nine years had passed since an East Bay high schooler last heard his name called in the first round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft. On Monday, a pair of hard-throwing right-handed pitchers made up for lost time.

Bishop O’Dowd High’s Joe Ross was selected with the 25th overall pick by the San Diego Padres, and minutes later, the Cincinnati Reds took Alhambra’s Robert Stephenson with the 27th selection. James Harris, an outfielder from Oakland Tech, was the final compensation round pick, going at No. 60 to the Tampa Bay Rays, to cap an outstanding day for East Bay talent. Ross’ and Stephenson’s selections mark the first time since 1979 that two Bay Area players have been taken in the first […]
