Football: Callan Bard wins NFL Punt Pass Kick Sectionals

Congratulations to Callan Bard  (Napa) who won the NFL Pepsi, Punt, Pass & Kick Sectionals in Daly City last Saturday and will perform at the beginning of the 49er game next Sunday Dec 4th. This serious gridster is an athlete. He makes the drive on Sundays the day after pop-warner games for private sessions. When most kids are taking the day off playing video games he enjoys working on his receiving skills and speed.  Good luck Cal.

Football: Ryan Toney helps St Thomas advance to NCAA DIII second round of play-offs.

As a freshman Ryan Toney is contributing to a successful season as the Tommie’s advance to the second round of the NCAA Div III play-offs. Just last season he was one of the areas top yards per carry back playing for Valley Christian (Dublin).

Ryan Toney 10 62 301 36 265 4.3 3 21 26.5

Here’s an excerpt from their last game:

“Even in the playoffs the Tommies found playing time for freshman backups. Matt O’Connell took over at quarterback and Ryan Toney was carrying the ball by the end of the third quarter.

Toney burst to the edge and tumbled across the goal line for an eight yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Toney had six carries for 34 yards on the drive that put the Tommies up 48-2.”

Craig Jones Rushes for 205 yards and leads Modesto Central to Quarterfinal win

Modesto’s Central Catholic thumps Argonaut

Jones rushes for 205 yards in win

By Brian VanderBeek
JACKSON — JACKSON — It was cold, wet, physical, chippy and sloppy.

Central Catholic’s 21-7 victory Friday night was all you could ask for from a Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4 quarterfinal game … more or less.

Certainly, football fans wouldn’t have minded seeing more of Raiders’ running back Craig Jones, who carried 26 times for 205 yards, with 149 coming in the second half. And it also was a great battle between two very good defenses.

But Central Catholic could have lived with a lot less over-aggression, and the Raiders themselves were the first to admit fault after committing a shocking six personal fouls.

“It’s not acceptable because doing that will cost us a big game,” said Raiders coach Roger Canepa. “We’ve had a little problem because we’re aggressive, but six personal fouls is unacceptable. I’m not going to stick up for my kids about this. We have to clean it up.”

Jones, a senior leader on the team, was equally mortified by the six personal fouls.

“I don’t understand it,” Jones said. “We’re […]

Water Polo : Candau and SRV Wolves fall short in NCS bid

I’ve had water polo athletes in the past, most were dual sport athletes like Mike Cassady a Monte Vista pitcher who went on to pitch for CAL. Now I have Nick Candau. Nick was a pitcher who chose water polo as his main sport. Nick is the third Candau athlete I’ve trained, his older brother Matt is also a part time Gamespeed assistant.

Ive never seen a water polo match, so the NCS final between SRV and Miramonte was my first. These were the two best teams in the bay area and two of the best in California.  It was one of the most exciting sports competitions I have ever witnessed. Even though I am not the expert on how Nick played technically ( he did score two goals) I can assure you that his athletic feat was magnificent. I watched Nick basically swim back and forth the full length of the pool  (easily 30m)  for 36 minutes. But wait during that  time he has to tread water, sprint,  defend and elude competitors. For those not familiar with water polo it can be like UFC in the water, […]

DIY Sports Massage

DIY Sports Massage

What’s the most important part of a good workout? You’re recovery!

Athletes must keep in mind that muscle growth comes during rest periods.   You can ruin the greatest workout in the world if you don’t have the proper recovery “Habits”.  I’m always lecturing my athletes about nutrition, rest for recovery, stretching and lastly, what I term “body flush” or massage.

At the conclusion of a workout I like athletes to rehydrate (protein drink & water), do an active cool down (rowing, bike, vibration plate), light stretching (static), and self massage (ball, roller stick, foam roller). It’s the last one that I’d like to discuss because it’s easy, inexpensive and has a variety of recovery benefits.

Myofasial release, trigger point therapy are also terms used to describe this form of massage.  Self massage techniques stretch muscles and tendons and breaks down the scar tissue and adhesions that result from training.

The benefits of self massage are:

  1. Flushes the body of lactic acid and toxins.
  2. Decreases inflammation (soreness, stiffness).
  3. Restores flexibility and range of motion.
  4. Improves circulation to speed recovery.
  5. […]
