So you got cut, Maybe the coach did you a favor?

A couple years ago there was this athlete who didn’t make his varsity team. The coach told him he was not big, strong or fast enough to make the varsity roster. His only option was to play down on the junior varsity team. The athletes decision was to become a better athlete so he would-be bigger, faster and stronger for the next year. For the next six months he did just that. Fast forward to his senior year and the coach practically begged him to come back out. When he did, it was as the starting shortstop and furthermore he went on to receive a scholarship to an east coast DI program. In my opinion the coach did him a favor.

You probably don’t want to hear this right now but you know the saying, “one door closes another one opens”. Well that can be true. Ok, the final names are listed for the upcoming season and yours is missing from the list. It can definitely be disheartening. However, with with the right attitude, perspective on your situation and planning it could be just what you needed.

Once the emotions of anger, self pity and bewilderment subside here’s what you […]

Pitchers In Season Maintenance & Recovery Program

Pitchers In Season Maintenance & Recovery Program
The purpose of this program is to provide high school pitchers with a structured program aimed at keeping their arms and bodies healthy and maintaining their off season training gains while positioning the athlete to handle the upcoming summer showcase season.
Most athletes typically run the risk of “detraining” during the competitive season. Unless there are efforts to maintain general conditioning, strength, flexibility and power most athletes will experience a decline.  By June  athletes face a predicament where they may be tired, hurt, or just plain out of gas when the summer season begins.
Even the best off season program must be followed by a maintenance program. Think of it like this: Your body is a savings account, off season conditioning is a way of depositing or storing funds. Well developed programs allow for big deposits, others not so much. During the season (draw period) the athlete starts to spend these funds (games/practices etc).  Over the course of three months it is typical for an athlete’s funds to run low or completely out (performance decrease/ or injury).  Most however do manage to survive the prep season with solid performances and little to no […]

The Results Are In: Top Gun Program A Success!

Below is the initial follow up and results dated Feb 8th 2016.  As of July22nd only one athlete has suffered an arm injury due to an extended lay off vacation period and resuming throwing without the proper ramp up activities. One athlete is still throwing on average 88-89 mph at this late date at the Area Code tryouts.  A four (4) mph improvement over his last years average.

The Top Gun program concluded last month in our opinion with great success. The program consisted of twenty three (23) training days (after 8 days prep cycle) over a four month period, twice a week and four training cycles. Two days were guest instructors one on Grip & Spin for Effective Pitching and the second on Mental Skills training. So actually twenty one (21) training days. The goals of the program were accomplished by each and every athlete. In addition, every athlete who started the program on day one finished the program. We lost no athletes during this process.

Unlike most programs that start with huge fanfare and high participation we graduated every athlete who signed up. This speaks to the dedication and enthusiasm of our athletes and […]

What’s the most important component in developing a young pitcher or throwing athlete?

Management

Pitch counts and staying away from high risk pitches are just a start. Young arms need a completely managed plan that encompasses age appropriate physical training, education for both the athlete and parent and monitoring of all throwing activities.

The Young Guns Program is about the comprehensive management of young athletes who participate in year round baseball and softball throwing and pitching activities.

The goals of the Program are to:

v. Develop the physical foundation to progress successfully through all levels of softball and baseball.
v. Empower the athlete and parent with the knowledge to make sound, sensible and appropriate decisions in regards to their athlete’s abilities, performance and expectations.
v. To put the athlete on the proper trajectory to be competitive at the various levels of their sport.

Expected Outcomes:

v. Improved range of motion and flexibility.
v. Improved endurance and stamina.
