“Quick Study” results in trip to State meet for Hurdler!

hurdles

Well this is a nice story. DeJah Robinson came to Gamespeed just two weeks before the NCS Meet of Champions this past weekend. When an athlete shows up this late in the game there’s nothing you can do speed or conditioning wise to make them better. The best you can do is tinker or fine tune their technique and hope it sticks under the pressure of competition. Well Dejah proved to be a “quick” study. We focused only on two things: her block start and arm technique. After just two sessions the tenth grader from St Mary’s dropped her personal best 300m hurdle time from 47.68 to 45.60! almost two seconds! Good enough to place third and a trip to the California State meet.

A testament to her willingness to change and her ability to learn so quickly and execute under extreme pressure. I am looking forward to working more with this athlete.

Incidentally she followed the NCS champion Gamespeed trained alum Michelle Thompson (2012, 2013, 2014 summer) of Dougherty Valley. Great job Michelle.

Speedsters move on to State meet.

Gamespeed tracksters ran exceptionally well at the NCS Meet of Champions this past weekend. The qualifier for the state meet these three gentlemen qualified for a total of nine events. CJ Edwards (not pictured) was runner up in the 100m and ran a leg of the winning 400m relay of Castro Valley.

All of these gentlemen put in a lot of work starting their training as early as July of last year! They made it pay off.  On to state fellas!

College Ready Program

A recent study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning published a survey on the opinions of university strength and conditioning coaches and the preparedness of freshman athletes entering collegiate athletics. Below is an excerpt:

HOW PREPARED ARE COLLEGE FRESHMEN ATHLETES FOR THE RIGORS OF
COLLEGE STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING? A SURVEY OF COLLEGE
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACHES

Wade, Susan; Pope, Zachary C.; Simonson, Shawn R.

There are a variety of areas identified where freshman are falling short.

…SCC (strength & conditioning coaches) stated incoming college freshman athletes lack lower extremity strength, overall flexibility, and core strength as well as proper Olympic lifting technique. SCC also stated that athletes lacked the mental toughness to endure collegiate sport training in addition to claiming incoming athletes lacked knowledge of correct nutrition and recovery principles. These results suggest a lack of collegiate training/sport preparedness of high school athletes. High school strength and conditioning specialist’s goal is to produce better athletes and doing so requires the strength and conditioning coach/trainer to have knowledge of how to train high school athletes….

Playmaker- Speed & Power Conditioning Class (July- Aug)

The Speed-Power connection is crucial to success in athletics. Athletes who demonstrate these qualities are dynamic, explosive and usually make the difference in competition. Training to be this type of athlete takes a program that blends proper strength and conditioning with speed and movement exercises.

Robin Hu dazzles in Triple A debut

Athlete: Robin Hu
Gamespeed Training: Off Season Conditioning & Velocity
Duration: 3 years.

robin hu tripleA

The Rochester Red Wings were savoring a 4-3 victory over the Durham Bulls early Tuesday afternoon when pitching coach Marty Mason emerged from his office and stopped winning pitcher Chih-Wei Hu in the clubhouse hallway.

Mason had a little memento for Hu to take back to Fort Myers: the lineup card from an impressive Triple-A debut.

The Wings are predicting it was the first of many victories at this level — and perhaps beyond.

“I just feel very good,” Hu said after making the special spot start in the 11:05 a.m. school-day special at Frontier Field.

Hu, a 21-year-old native of Taichung, Taiwan, allowed just one run and two hits in six innings, walking four and striking out six. Brock Peterson’s two-run homer in the fourth powered the offense.

“What a great job that kid did,” manager Mike Quade said. “I’m anxious to see him down the road career wise. He’s got good stuff.”

Hu’s curve was especially effective and he even threw an occasional palm ball, a pitch that few pitchers — maybe no pitchers? — in today’s game throw.
