Boys track

Enzo Villadolid a threat to break league records in three events.

I got a great update from Enzo’s dad he writes::

“I want to thank you again for the coaching and training you give him. He is doing really well in his school track team. They join the PPSL league and, so far, he has won all his individual events. The way things are shaping up, he has a real chance to break the 6th Grade PPSL league record in the 100 m. , 200 m. and Long Jump.”…..

“He also participated in the AAU meet that was held in Dublin HS last week. In the Sub-Youth Division, he got a gold in Long Jump, a bronze in 100 m. and another bronze in 200 m..  His marks: LJ = 17’00” ; 100 m.: 12.72 secs. ; 200 m.= 26.20 secs.”

Baseball: GS Pitchers making presence known in early season

Not widely known but Gamespeed provides a lot of training for baseball pitchers. Most go through our “Off Season Pitchers Conditioning Program” to improve velocity, endurance and durability. These guys put in a lot of hours and were starting to see it pay off.  Guys like James Marvel of Campo are already on the national radar but some others are starting to make some noise.  Anthony Olmo of Granada just got some local ink as he dominated in the title game of the Alhambra Classic.  (story below).

Congratulations to some early results and feedback from these Gamespeed hurlers!

John Pacha Alhambra FR. Playing JV and Varsity. John’s velocity has went from 67mph last year to 77mph as of last month. Most think he’s at 80mph  currently.

James Carter SR San Ramon Valley has reportedly touched 93mph  up from the mid 80’s last season. He’s sitting at the high 80’s now.

Anthony Olmo SR Granada fast ball has risen from 82mph to a high of 89mph and is throwing great.  He just threw an excellent game read about it here:

GS Alum Brianna Knight PCSC Coastal Division Player of the Week

Way to go Brianna. She spent 3 years in the GS program. She also played for Phil Mumma’s Sorcerer Softball. She was one of the first athletes we had out of the Rodriguez High (Fairfield) program. She has since been followed by Cheynne Cordes (CAL) , Kiara Garcia (Oregon State) and Marissa Esalante (UC Riverside).

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In the wake of a four-homerun weekend, including two homers in the same inning, which allowed Santa Clara a series split over league-favorites LMU, Bronco senior outfielder Briana Knight (Fairfield, Calif./Angelo Rodriguez HS) was named the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Coastal Division Player of the Week.

Knight – twice a PCSC All-Coastal Division First Team player – hit four homeruns during the weekend series in Los Angeles and powered SCU to a stunning seven-run comeback victory over LMU Sunday afternoon 9-7. Knight hit the go-ahead three-run drive, which capped off the rally, after belting a two-run shot earlier in the inning.

Knight went 5 for 15 during five games last week (four with LMU and one against No. 13 Stanford – all on the road). She was 5 for 12 with eight RBI against LMU, helping SCU get off to […]

Baseball: GS Trained tandem share league lead in home runs, Massoni commits to DI school.

Scott Quinlan and Craig Massoni  both SRV products now playing for Chabot College share the lead in homeruns for the Golden Gate conference with 3 a piece. Both have combined for 29 RBI’s.  Quinlan spent about seven weeks in the GS speed and power program just over the summer while Massoni completed a full 3 month regiment. Massoni also had great news last week he wrote:

Aaron,

Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you and Mike again for all of your help this summer and winter. I was really able to take my game to the next level with your training and because of that I was able to verbally commit to play Division 1 baseball next year on a scholarship. I will be going to play at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee next year, which is a school in the Ohio Valley Conference. I can’t thank you guys enough for all of your help, and I would not have this opportunity without your guys commitment to my development as an athlete. Hope all is well.

Sincerely,

Craig Massoni

The pleasure was all our Craig!

“Why Jack & Jill Can’t Run Up the Hill”: Four reasons why youth athletes lack speed.

The next time  you are at a kids game, practice or just at the park note how many kids can’t run. Yes, I said it, can’t run. I’m not talking Olympic sprint technique just basic coordination. Notice the herky -jerky, waddling, shuffling, flailing movements.  It doesn’t take a trained eye to see somethings amiss. Whats missing are basic coordination and balance skills. Running is natural, it’s just that some of us come pre-wired to do it better than others.

The most basic skill in any field or court sport is running. If your child’s abilities are sub par in this most rudimentary athletic skill they will suffer. However, when it comes to speed for sports your now talking the development of a skill.  A skill that can be learned and honed to achieve a competitive standing or even dominance in sport.

Why cant kids run?

Here are my top 4 reasons why athletes today struggle with running.

1. Decline of recreational play activities. The youth of today spend less time playing fun games. Remember dodge ball, kickball, hop scotch, tag. These games taught balance coordination and laid the foundation for the more complex […]

Baseball: Gamespeed athletes among top twelve players to watch in NCS baseball this season.

The North Coast section is one of the most competitive and talented baseball sections in California. The CC Times has just announced the season preview and noted some of the top 12 players to watch.  We’ve got two on this list.  See below. However not to be out done are some of our athletes that are not on this very short list. Max Dutto of SRV definitely comes to mind. Congrats to:

James Marvel, Campolindo: James under went an extensive  six month pitchers off season conditioning program. His work included tendon-ligament strength, total body explosiveness, arm care and strength, our “Tornado” core development, and body durability training.  He put on 20lbs of muscle and is throwing hard. We worked hand in had with his pitching coach Jeff Pick (Orinda) in managing James’ talent. He has committed to Duke but don’t be surprised to see him get draft interest.

Track: Coach Aaron defends national sprint title, runner up in Long Jump

Bloomington, Indiana

Last weekend I competed in the Masters Indoor National Championships. To keep it brief:

1st place 60m dash 7.10

Happy with my performance but still dealing with Anterior tendonosis (runner’s ankle). Getting it under control but painful to run. Had an excellent start and accelerated well. Bodes good for outdoor 100m races. Keeps my unbeaten streak alive for 60m five years and running.

2nd place Long Jump 6.05 m

Honestly jumped like a rookie. First jump was best then downhill. Jammed my leg on third attempt and leg was dead thereafter but wanted to take all my jumps. Saving grace was I hit the board 4 out of 6 times. A major improvement for me. Yeah! Hope to take jumps at full speed in my next competition.

All in all a success and only came back bruised but not beaten!

Track: Block Starts as Easy as 1-2-3!

The start is probably the most important part of the short sprints. Not from the stand point that if you react first you will win. More often than not the person who gets out the blocks first is not always the winner. The importance of the start is how it  “sets up” your acceleration.

Scientists have measured all the components of racing and reaction only contributes to 1% of the total effect of your race. It is those athletes that accelerate best; over the longest distance and reach faster speeds during it are most successful.

Setting Your Blocks

Block Spacing: There are no set parameters for block positions. It depends on leg strength, leg length, and comfort.  Some methods of determining block settings include measuring from the starting line, measuring space between the blocks or setting spacing based on leg length (table). What I suggest for most athletes is something I’ve devised called the 1,2,3 Method. […]

Young trackster drops .65 off his 100m time.

Enzo Villadolid has been at Gamespeed for 5 months working on his track technique.  In his first outing of the year it showed with a whopping personal best at the Los Gatos all comers. The twelve year old speedster is already posting times that would compete highly against any high school freshman. Way to go Enzo!

His dad Joey alerted me to the race in an email:

Hi, Coach!

Enzo ran today at the Los Gatos All Comers. Set his PB in both the 100m. and 200m.

He ran 12.93 in the 100 m.. His previous PB was 13.58 set in July 2011 (6 months ago). That is 0.65 secs. faster.

Also, even to my untrained eye, I can see that his running form is much improved. He runs in a more efficient way now. Not much wasted energy on unnecessary movement.

Thank you, Coach.
