Baseball: Kyle Jensen gets invite to Marlins big league camp

Props to Kyle Jensen.  A 2009 Marlins 12th round draft pick out of St Marys College just got the call a couple weeks ago.  He’s made the 40 man roster and will be called to big league camp. Kyle has been using his off seasons at Gamespeed to improve his power at the plate and speed in the outfield.  He is coming off a spectacular season where he earned minor league honors.

GS: Craig Jones inducted into Modesto Bee Teen Hall of Fame

Teen Hall of Fame: Craig Jones, Central Catholic High

By Christopher Renteria
Teens in the Newsroom

MODESTO — At 18, Craig Jones has already accomplished more than most teens his age dream of.

By the start of his senior year, Craig had already passed four of his Advanced Placement tests and had received eight college credits from Stanford University after participating in the school’s summer program in 2010.

When it comes to sports, calling Craig an all-star athlete only scratches the surface of all that he has accomplished in just the past few years. This year, Craig not only had the privilege of being this year’s captain of the varsity football team, but when he wasn’t playing as an outside linebacker or fullback, he played as a middle linebacker and tailback.

DIV Player of the Year: Craig Jones RB/LB, Central Catholic

The accolades keep coming for Modesto’s Craig Jones. He has been accepted to Stanford University and has accepted a “preferred” walk on status to the Cardinal football team. Now he is honored as his divisions Player of the Year.  A Gamespeed athlete for six years he has wanted to be a Cardinal and has devoted all of his energies both athletically and academically to that end. This young man has an amazing work ethic and drive. Believe me he has other options with other schools (many Ivy League) but I admire his determination and desire to follow what he wants out of his career. I am proud to see all this come true for him and have no doubt I will see him on the field next year wearing a cardinal uniform. He is the epitomy of the “student -athlete”.

GS: Andre Ward Crowned Sports Ilustrated Fighter of the Year

The hits keep coming for the Bay Area’s Andre Ward. After winning the Super Six Boxing Classic and consolidating the WBA & WBC Super Middle Weight Titles he has garnered the Sports Illustrated Fighter of the Year Award. He beats out some of boxing’s finest in the likes of  Manny Pacquio and Floyd Maywether.

Ward will likely defend his title next spring or summer possibly against Canadian Lucian Bute. We’ve already spoken and he’ll be back at Gamespeed getting better than ever.

Sports Illustrated: Inside Boxing

By Chris Mannix

There is a certain rhythm to Andre Ward’s game, a musical elegance gifted only to the finest performers. The technical brilliance is there, a product of a 10-year amateur career that culminated with an Olympic gold medal in 2004. There is the strength and power, speed and agility, a perfect blend of skills that have, thus far, made Ward unbeatable at the pro level. He is, as Carl Froch put it on Saturday night, moments after Ward beat him for the Super Six title, “a slippery eel,” hard, if not impossible, to cleanly hit, a fighter without concussive power but, at 168 pounds, physically […]

Were so proud of you Andre! Congratulations on an awesome performance on behalf of all of us at Gamespeed.

Andre Ward decisions Carl Froch

Associated Press

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Andre Ward staked his claim as the top 168-pound division fighter, using his speed and a combination of lefts to defeat Carl Froch in a unanimous decision Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in the Super Six super middleweight tournament final.

Ward, the Olympic gold medalist from Oakland, Calif., retained his WBA championship and won the WBC super middleweight belt in the final bout of the unique tournament that stretched out over two years.

“One of the strongest assets I have is my mind. I kept my composure, I kept things under control. And we pulled it off,” Ward said. “I hope I did a good job. But we can still get better, believe it or not.”

Ward (25-0, 13 KOs) dictated the pace from the opening round, connecting on a series of left hooks to rattle Froch. Froch, out of Nottingham, England, never came close to getting knocked out. Froch (28-2, 20 KOs) did not get going until late, though, finally showing some […]

GS: Cal Bard finsihes strong in NFL Punt, Pass, Kick Qualifies for Finals

Locals finish strong in Punt, Pass & Kick contest

“Cal is a great competitor and comes from a awesomely athletic family. A hardworking GS product for the past two years he continues to carry on the family tradition of outstanding athletics.  He is making sure he is not outdone by the rest of his family.” – Gamespeed

Cal Bard likes catching the ball on offense and making tackles on defense.

“He enjoys football,” Troy Bard said of his son, who was a wide receiver, cornerback/safety and captain for a Napa Saints junior midget team that played in the Diablo Valley Youth Football Conference this year. “He likes to be around the ball.”

Bard brings something else to the game. He can flat out throw the ball.

Based on his results in the NFL’s 51st annual Punt, Pass & Kick program, and the way that he kept advancing in the different stages of the competition, Bard may want to consider trying out for quarterback when he starts high school next year.

“I had really good performances,” said Bard, who is in the eighth grade at Redwood Middle School. “Napa was my best one.”

Each participant in […]

GS: Boxer Andre Ward Profiled in CC Times for Upcoming Title Bout

It isn’t known by many but local boxing phenom Andre Ward raises his game at our very own Gamespeed.  The Dublin resident has been undergoing a special boxing specific speed and power training program developed by coach Aaron Thigpen. With a combination of private training and open gym sessions the unassuming champion comes in and quietly goes about his work.  He is always approachable and friendly with parents and athletes, a contrast to the boistrous boxing types you commonly see on TV.

We just concluded our three month training cycle and he’s off for the title fight for the World Super Six Boxing Classic Title in Atlantic City, NJ December 17th.

We wish you the best Andre. Pay per view here I come!

Football: Callan Bard wins NFL Punt Pass Kick Sectionals

Congratulations to Callan Bard  (Napa) who won the NFL Pepsi, Punt, Pass & Kick Sectionals in Daly City last Saturday and will perform at the beginning of the 49er game next Sunday Dec 4th. This serious gridster is an athlete. He makes the drive on Sundays the day after pop-warner games for private sessions. When most kids are taking the day off playing video games he enjoys working on his receiving skills and speed.  Good luck Cal.
