Andre Ward decisions Carl Froch

Associated Press

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Andre Ward staked his claim as the top 168-pound division fighter, using his speed and a combination of lefts to defeat Carl Froch in a unanimous decision Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in the Super Six super middleweight tournament final.

Ward, the Olympic gold medalist from Oakland, Calif., retained his WBA championship and won the WBC super middleweight belt in the final bout of the unique tournament that stretched out over two years.

“One of the strongest assets I have is my mind. I kept my composure, I kept things under control. And we pulled it off,” Ward said. “I hope I did a good job. But we can still get better, believe it or not.”

Ward (25-0, 13 KOs) dictated the pace from the opening round, connecting on a series of left hooks to rattle Froch. Froch, out of Nottingham, England, never came close to getting knocked out. Froch (28-2, 20 KOs) did not get going until late, though, finally showing some […]

GS: Cal Bard finsihes strong in NFL Punt, Pass, Kick Qualifies for Finals

Locals finish strong in Punt, Pass & Kick contest

“Cal is a great competitor and comes from a awesomely athletic family. A hardworking GS product for the past two years he continues to carry on the family tradition of outstanding athletics.  He is making sure he is not outdone by the rest of his family.” – Gamespeed

Cal Bard likes catching the ball on offense and making tackles on defense.

“He enjoys football,” Troy Bard said of his son, who was a wide receiver, cornerback/safety and captain for a Napa Saints junior midget team that played in the Diablo Valley Youth Football Conference this year. “He likes to be around the ball.”

Bard brings something else to the game. He can flat out throw the ball.

Based on his results in the NFL’s 51st annual Punt, Pass & Kick program, and the way that he kept advancing in the different stages of the competition, Bard may want to consider trying out for quarterback when he starts high school next year.

“I had really good performances,” said Bard, who is in the eighth grade at Redwood Middle School. “Napa was my best one.”

GS: Boxer Andre Ward Profiled in CC Times for Upcoming Title Bout

It isn’t known by many but local boxing phenom Andre Ward raises his game at our very own Gamespeed.  The Dublin resident has been undergoing a special boxing specific speed and power training program developed by coach Aaron Thigpen. With a combination of private training and open gym sessions the unassuming champion comes in and quietly goes about his work.  He is always approachable and friendly with parents and athletes, a contrast to the boistrous boxing types you commonly see on TV.

We just concluded our three month training cycle and he’s off for the title fight for the World Super Six Boxing Classic Title in Atlantic City, NJ December 17th.

We wish you the best Andre. Pay per view here I come!

Heres a profile story from this weeks Contra Costa times:

Football: Callan Bard wins NFL Punt Pass Kick Sectionals

Congratulations to Callan Bard  (Napa) who won the NFL Pepsi, Punt, Pass & Kick Sectionals in Daly City last Saturday and will perform at the beginning of the 49er game next Sunday Dec 4th. This serious gridster is an athlete. He makes the drive on Sundays the day after pop-warner games for private sessions. When most kids are taking the day off playing video games he enjoys working on his receiving skills and speed.  Good luck Cal.

Football: Ryan Toney helps St Thomas advance to NCAA DIII second round of play-offs.

As a freshman Ryan Toney is contributing to a successful season as the Tommie’s advance to the second round of the NCAA Div III play-offs. Just last season he was one of the areas top yards per carry back playing for Valley Christian (Dublin).
Ryan Toney 10 62 301 36 265 4.3 3 21 26.5

Here’s an excerpt from their last game:

“Even in the playoffs the Tommies found playing time for freshman backups. Matt O’Connell took over at quarterback and Ryan Toney was carrying the ball by the end of the third quarter.

Toney burst to the edge and tumbled across the goal line for an eight yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Toney had six carries for 34 yards on the drive that put the Tommies up 48-2.”

Craig Jones Rushes for 205 yards and leads Modesto Central to Quarterfinal win

Modesto’s Central Catholic thumps Argonaut

Jones rushes for 205 yards in win

By Brian VanderBeek
JACKSON — JACKSON — It was cold, wet, physical, chippy and sloppy.

Central Catholic’s 21-7 victory Friday night was all you could ask for from a Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4 quarterfinal game … more or less.

Certainly, football fans wouldn’t have minded seeing more of Raiders’ running back Craig Jones, who carried 26 times for 205 yards, with 149 coming in the second half. And it also was a great battle between two very good defenses.

But Central Catholic could have lived with a lot less over-aggression, and the Raiders themselves were the first to admit fault after committing a shocking six personal fouls.

“It’s not acceptable because doing that will cost us a big game,” said Raiders coach Roger Canepa. “We’ve had a little problem because we’re aggressive, but six personal fouls is unacceptable. I’m not going to stick up for my kids about this. We have to clean it up.”

Jones, a senior leader on the team, was equally mortified by the six personal fouls.

“I don’t understand it,” Jones said. “We’re […]
