Water Polo : Candau and SRV Wolves fall short in NCS bid

I’ve had water polo athletes in the past, most were dual sport athletes like Mike Cassady a Monte Vista pitcher who went on to pitch for CAL. Now I have Nick Candau. Nick was a pitcher who chose water polo as his main sport. Nick is the third Candau athlete I’ve trained, his older brother Matt is also a part time Gamespeed assistant.

Ive never seen a water polo match, so the NCS final between SRV and Miramonte was my first. These were the two best teams in the bay area and two of the best in California.  It was one of the most exciting sports competitions I have ever witnessed. Even though I am not the expert on how Nick played technically ( he did score two goals) I can assure you that his athletic feat was magnificent. I watched Nick basically swim back and forth the full length of the pool  (easily 30m)  for 36 minutes. But wait during that  time he has to tread water, sprint,  defend and elude competitors. For those not familiar with water polo it can be like UFC in the water, […]

Gamespeed baseball athletes enjoy national signing day

Congratulations to our GS athletes on this past weeks signing of their letters of intent. Out of 18 baseball athletes signing 8 are current GS athletes.  Three will be going to CAL who already has four or five former clients. It will be great to watch these guys play locally.

We’d also like to acknowledge one of our former softball players Marissa Escalante of Rodriguez High who signed her letter of intent with UC Riverside.

DIY Sports Massage

DIY Sports Massage

What’s the most important part of a good workout? You’re recovery!

Athletes must keep in mind that muscle growth comes during rest periods.   You can ruin the greatest workout in the world if you don’t have the proper recovery “Habits”.  I’m always lecturing my athletes about nutrition, rest for recovery, stretching and lastly, what I term “body flush” or massage.

At the conclusion of a workout I like athletes to rehydrate (protein drink & water), do an active cool down (rowing, bike, vibration plate), light stretching (static), and self massage (ball, roller stick, foam roller). It’s the last one that I’d like to discuss because it’s easy, inexpensive and has a variety of recovery benefits.

Myofasial release, trigger point therapy are also terms used to describe this form of massage.  Self massage techniques stretch muscles and tendons and breaks down the scar tissue and adhesions that result from training.

The benefits of self massage are:

  1. Flushes the body of lactic acid and toxins.
  2. Decreases inflammation (soreness, stiffness).
  3. Restores flexibility and range of motion.
  4. Improves circulation to speed recovery.
  5. […]

Football: Craig Jones Excels in Classroom and on field for Central Modesto

A great story on an exceptional young man. A GS athlete since 2006 Craig has been impressive in the gym, football field, track and classroom.  It’s not hard to notice that this kid got it. Leadership qualities and a steadiness that escapes most of his age.  I have no doubt he will accomplish his goals as an athlete and a student. Stanford will be the one missing out if they don’t let him in and as a walk on they would be getting a steal!

Balancing act: Central’s Jones true student-athlete

By Richard T. Estrada

While many of his football-playing peers are analyzing X’s and O’s and trying to uncover weak areas in the cover-five zone, Craig Jones is busy working on a different level.

The Central Catholic senior is splitting time between his playbook and four Advanced Placement courses as he tries to earn an invite to Stanford.

If the Cardinal deems Jones acceptable, it would be merely as a student — not as a football player. He’d have to earn that distinction, as well, as a walk-on player at the school.

Football: Ray Hudson knows he can get the job done

I love this story about Ray Hudson. The confidence he displays in his ability  is what we like to see in our athletes. Ray spent his off season working with us on his speed and agility, footwork and catching skills and participating in our Saturday Football class led by coach Mike. With all the work he got done I’m not surprised by his answer.

Congrats also go out to his quarterback another GS athlete, Tommy Paulson  a first year varsity QB who will be a force coming next year.

Facing a fourth and goal and trailing by six points with just over a minute to go, Foothill High football coach Matt Sweeney was going to call a fade to the corner of the end zone for junior wide receiver Ray Hudson.

Sweeney then asked his best receiver if he could beat his guy, and Hudson told his coach he could. Then he did, scrapping the fade and catching a ball on a stop pattern just inside the goal line, giving the host Falcons a 14-13 come-from-behind East Bay […]

Football: Late touchdown by GS tandem downs Acalanes

The GS tandem of Ed Achzinger and Jeff Leung scored a late touchdown to beat league rival Acalanes. These two happen to be teammates on the track teams record setting 400m relay. Cant wait to get these guys back on the track.

DFAL football roundup: Dublin High scores late touchdown to thwart Acalanes rally

A 28-yard touchdown pass from Edward Achziger to Jeff Leung on fourth down with less than a minute remaining Friday proved to be the difference-maker as host Dublin High held off a second-half rally to beat Acalanes 32-29.

Dublin (5-2, 2-2 Diablo Foothill Athletic League) looked in complete control at halftime, getting scores on its first four possessions to build an 18-point advantage at intermission.

But that cushion disappeared with a 4-yard touchdown rush from Craig Anderson that capped a run of 22 unanswered points, giving Acalanes (4-5, 2-3) a 29-25 lead with four minutes remaining.

The Dons’ only lead of the game wouldn’t last long, however, as Achziger orchestrated the ensuing possession into the game-winning drive behind an impressive combination of passing and running.

Achziger would account for […]

Football: Monte Vista’s Ryan Neil inspirational story.

What a great story about perserverence and believing in ones self. Ryan has been with GS for seven months working on catching up and has blossomed beautifully. He definitly left no stone unturned working tirelessly on his speed, agility , changing his physique, following proper nutrition and working with a linemen skills coach. He had some great camps this summer and I’m sure will get a DI offer. If given the chance we could be watching this kid in the NFL . Great job Ryan!

The best offensive linemen are always pushing forward. Ryan Neil, an 18-year-old senior guard at Monte Vista High, knows that better than anybody.

He kept pushing forward through a two-year period of his life that very nearly undercut his dream in a sport he so dearly loves.

Growing up, Neil was one of the best multisport athletes in the Danville area, but because of his size, his specialty was football. Now at 6-foot-6 and a well-tapered 280 […]

Alan Jaeger Long Toss Camp & Arm Care clinic comes to Bay Area

Just got an email from Alan Jaeger. He’s coming to the Bay Area soon. He is the guy who has put Long Toss on the map but his program is much more. Its about mental preparation, performance and arm health going hand in hand. It is a way for athletes to empower themselves  about one of the most important aspects of their game “throwing”. In my opinion if your not doing long toss you may be one throw away from an injury. Take the time to go to his clinic.
