Alhambra High’s Robert Stephenson named California’s Baseball Player of Year

By Ben Enos Contra Costa Times

Just days after completing his senior season, Alhambra High’s Robert Stephenson has been named the Gatorade California Baseball Player of the Year. As a pitcher, Stephenson finished the season with a 8-2 record, 1.19 ERA, 142 strikeouts and only 23 walks. He did it with an ever-growing group of professional scouts at every game, and helped the Bulldogs reach the second round of the North Coast Section Division III playoffs. “To me, it’s a great honor,” Stephenson said. “Overall, I thought it was a pretty good season. I thought we had a pretty good year.” Stephenson also hit .324 with 14 RBIs and played right field when he wasn’t on the mound. His calling card, though, was a fastball that could hit 98 mph, a sharp curveball that often proved unhittable and poise on the mound. “I think it’ll be cool to look back and see all the accomplishments,” Stephenson said. Stephenson has already committed to attend Washington but is expected to be a first- or second-round draft pick in Monday’s Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

Lacrosse: GS Alum JW MCGovern signs with Yale

Its been a couple of years since we’ve seen JW MC Govern (St Ignatius). He used to make the trek from Oakland regularly but commute problems made it difficult recently. However, it looks like that early hard work and difficult commute  has paid off. I got a great call from his mom the other day.

She stated: “JW was selected to First team for the WCAL league and had signed to play at Yale. She wanted to thank Gamespeed for being instrumental in what he has achieved thus far and we played a big part in his development as a Lacrosse player.”

Hey JW, we still have that signed picture of you on the wall. Stop on by and bring us one of you at Yale.

Softball: Megan Averitt Co-MVP ACCAL

Outfielder Megan Averitt was voted the leagues co-MVP.  The senior from Alameda High will move onto Dartmouth College. She happens to follow in the footsteps of another GS athlete Nikki Yee who prepped at Carondelet, graduated Dartmouth in 2010 and is now in medical school.

While at GS Megan was an superb, showing great amounts of strength and power as she performed power-plyo combos. She will be ready for the next level.

Great job Megan were proud of you.

Baseball: Max Dutto & Jeff Antenucci receive San Ramon Valley Team Awards

Today and the future look bright for the shortstop position on the San Ramon Valley Baseball team.

Congratulations fellas:

Max Dutto received the Offensive Most Valuable Player award. Max is a hard working athlete who will probably be the next big infielder to come out of the Tri-Valley area. He made the varsity squad as a sophomore, a rarity in the SRV program. He follows in the footsteps of another SRV graduate and Gamespeed athlete James Darnell a second round pick with the San Diego Padres.

Jeff Antenucci was awarded the Freshman Defensive player of the year. He had a near perfect performance. Nursing an elbow injury all season he made only one error at shortstop and even his coach says that was questionable.

Two Gamespeed athletes are nominees for California Gatorade Player of the Year

Softball standout Cheyenne Cordes of Rodriguez  high school in Fairfield was honored with the nomination. The CAL bound senior plays shortstop and has competed internationally on the USA Jr national team. A long time GS athlete since the age of twelve she is very deserving of the honor and I wish her the best.

Robert Stephenson, the much heralded pitcher from Alhambra High is one of the nations top prospects. With a fastball that has hit 97mph he is on every major league teams watch list. Over the past two years I’ve dubbed him “Mr Perfect Attendance” for his dedication  and rarely ever missing a workout.  Robert is in the mold of a former Gamespeed athlete and Gatorade Player of the year back in 2002, Chris Gruler  of Liberty High (Brentwood) who was a 2nd overall pick in that years draft.

The Gatorade State Player of the Year award winners are evaluated and selected on the basis of three criteria:

Athletic Achievement — success made at the club, national or international levels of competition, and standout performances in their respective sport. Includes statistical production, honors, skill-set evaluation, leadership ability, overall impact on team success and historical context of accomplishments.

Academic Excellence — review of […]

Track: Dublin boys team makes history

Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Track team at Dublin high. It was three years ago when coach Williams took over the program and asked me to be the sprint coach. He had a vision to turn a floundering program around and make it a track power in the area. It was a challenge I wanted to be a part of.  Last week the program has made its most significant step towards that goal. Well done athletes and coach Williams the driving force behind the program.

Contra Costa Times:

The Dublin boys team won the first outright league varsity track and field title in the school’s history, according to coach Chris Williams.

The Gaels scored 97 points to edge Campolindo by four points for the DFAL championship boys team title. Dublin also finished the DFAL regular season undefeated.

Dublin racked up several points in the jumps, sprints and hurdles at the DFAL championships. The Gaels’ Keremiah Crockett won both the triple jump (43-53/4) and the long jump (21-63/4), and teammates Jordan Davis and Jabari Davis also finished third and fourth in the triple jump. Jordan Davis was also sixth in the long jump and third […]
