Speed Training Ensures Survival of the Swiftest

Let’s be honest — in most sports, those who are slow, don’t play! How many athletes are given a shot just based on their speed? Or overlooked because they’re too slow? Most scenarios in sports come down to one thing: GET THERE FIRST!

  • Get the ball first
  • Break away
  • Beat the throw
  • First off the line

You name the scenario and there is some aspect of speed involved. In most cases, the spoils go to the swift, not the biggest. Even when comparing two big-sized athletes, who do they take? The faster of the two. If you want to compete, you have to train to go faster.

That’s what we do at Gamespeed. Our program is not for those who want to work out. It’s for those who want to TRAIN. Looking for performance and speed training? Catch up with us at Gamespeed. To find out more, give us a call at (925) 513-8676.

Six -Pack Abs: Superficial not super when it comes to athletic performance

Core, core, core. It’s all you hear today in sports performance. “My athlete can’t do this or that because he has a weak core.” Gimmicks are all over TV touting tight six-pack abs. They are all geared toward flexion because when people “feel the burn” of an exercise, they feel as though the exercise is working. So athletes rush to the gym and coaches prescribe mega reps of crunches and sit-ups.

Without a complete understanding of how the core affects performance, this is a complete waste of time.  A strong and balanced core is a unit including several muscle groups working in coordination, not just the superficial six-pack. The most important muscles are the deep ones that cannot be seen and that are mostly responsible for athletic performance.

I liken the core to the transmission in a car — it allows for the transmission of torque and power to the legs and arms (speed & power).  It incorporates the frontal abdominal muscles (rectus abdominas), the lateral abdominal muscles (obliques), and the back muscle groups (erector spinae).

In terms of performance demands, I break it into three “athletic movement components.”  These components are:  trunk flexion (bending), trunk extension (upright), and trunk stabilizing (holding).

Athletes commonly […]

Athlete Highlights: Gamespeed-Trained Running Backs Go Head to Head

Aaron Prier, Ryan Toney

Gamespeed running backs Aaron Prier and Ryan Toney went head to head in last week’s matchup of Salesian against Valley Christian. Salesian won  63-41. The two Gamespeed-trained running backs  are both among the leaders in the East Bay. Salesian’s Aaron Prier is #4 overall against Valley Christian’s Ryan Toney, who is #5 overall.

In this game, Prier finished the evening with 244 combined yards (187 rushing, 57 receiving) and scored four touchdowns. Toney rushed for 168 yards and scored three touchdowns. Great job to both athletes on their excellent seasons.

Shai Kobayashi

A fingertip interception by Shai Kobayashi of Heritage, led to a 53-yard drive and score in last week’s game between Heritage and Freedom. Heritage won the game 28-17. It was at least the third interception for Gamespeed athlete Kobayashi this season. Great job, Shai.

Celina Li

Celina Li, who swims for Foothill, recently competed at an international swim competition in Russia. Celina made the top finals in the 200 Fly and took 8th place. She swam a personal best of 2:15:63. She also made the top seeded heat in the 400 IM and swam in the finals, but was unfortunately disqualified. She also took 17th place in the 200 Breast. Congratulations, […]
