Congratulations to Austin Fisher of Acalanes High. The versatile infielder made the most of his summer showing with a verbal commit to UC Santa Clara. A diligent and productive worker  at Gamespeed since 2010 made the investment in himself and its now paid off.  He was the first of three Gamespeed athletes (Alex Barden & Matt Smithwick of SRV) to commit to Santa Clara in the past couple months.

Fisher performed well at the RNWS and BAWS this summer

Acalanes shortstop Austin Fishercapped a successful summer with a verbal commitment. The senior-to-be decided to stay local and become a Bronco at Santa Clara University.

On his decision, Fisher said, “My three biggest factors for choosing Santa Clara were the coaching staff, the facilities, and the academics.”

Although Santa Clara was Fisher’s only offer at the time of his commitment, he also had interest from Boston College, Cal, Columbia, San Jose State, Utah, UC Davis, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, and the University of Pennsylvania. He took unofficial visits to San Jose State, Santa Clara, and UC San Diego.

During the summer, the 5-foot-9, 160 pounder started his breakout with a good showing at the Reebok NorCal World Series in Stockton. In the tournament he was 8-for-12 with four doubles. “After that was when I started getting contacted by a lot of schools,” he added.

Fisher followed it with a nice performance at the Bay Area World Series, which took place at Santa Clara University’s Schott Stadium. Fisher impressed with his fielding ability and strong arm.

“Overall I was fairly happy with my performance at the Bay Area World
Series,” said Fisher. “I felt that I really showed off all of my tools defensively, but I felt that I could have done a little better at the plate.”

On his strengths, Fisher said, to no surprise, “My greatest strength as a player is defense. I pride myself in having a combination of good footwork along with good hands and a strong arm.” He added that he wants to improve his strength and speed.

Fisher is also impressive in the classroom as he holds a 3.36 GPA and scored a 1910 on his SAT. His favorite subject is math but is unsure of a future major.

The Broncos added a standout defender in Fisher who opened some eyes this summer. Look for him to continue the success into his senior year and eventually in Santa Clara.
