Craig Massoni of Austin Peay having a phenomenal season.Â
Clarksville, TN – Junior Craig Massoni hit .634 to lead Austin Peay State University to a road sweep against UT Martin last weekend, earning the pair adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Co-Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced, Monday.
Massoni made it two weeks in a row and three times this season he’s earned at least a share of the OVC’s weekly honor. The Danville, Calif., native was 9-for-14 on the weekend, collecting three hits in each game against the Skyhawks.
He opened the series with a 3-for-5, two-home run, five-RBI performance in a 9-5 victory, with his first-inning, three-run blast securing the lead for good and his second making him the second Gov in as many weeks with a two-home run game – P.J. Torres hit two out, including a solo walk-off in the Govs’ series-opening victory against Morehead State.
He ‘only’ went 3-for-4 in the second game, and finished the series with a 3-for-5, two-RBI Sunday performance that included a solo home run and an RBI double.
Massoni ended the weekend leading the OVC in all three Triple Crown categories – his .391 batting average is 16 points ahead of Morehead State’s Kane Sweeney, while he’s tied with Tennessee Tech’s Zach Stephens in home runs (16) and RBI (60)
The slugging first baseman takes over the team lead in weekly OVC honors by a Bat Gov. Massoni now has three weekly honors; senior outfielder Cody Hudson and senior closer Tyler Rogers have two apiece, while Delgado and senior shortstop Reed Harper have been tapped as the best the conference has to offer one time each.
Off Season: Craig spent a lot of time regaining his speed and explosiveness in his lower body. We also put together a series of batting enhancement drills to improve bat speed and power.
Ya Garcia of Oregon State Softball
In Season: In her sophomore season she is hitting .313, slugging % .366, 10-13 stolen bases and fielding %.973. She has started all of the Beavers 56 game so far this season. They are currently playing n the NCAA regional tournament.
Off Season: Ya’s speed and power program included specially crafted Olympic hybrid lifts (improved safety), sprint work, explosives and sport specific movement and hitting enhancement workouts.
Dash Oliver CAL Track & Field
In Season: This year Dash is finding the form he lost a few years back during high school. After two seasons of not coming within two tenths of his best as a prep he is now consistently running in the 10.6 range. Just recently at the PAC 12 championships he ran a wind aided personal best of 10.49. He is now headed to the NCAA regional qualifier meet next week.
Off Season: Dash worked a lot on regaining his acceleration skills. Block work, body positioning, and arm drive were critical for returning to top form. Regaining the power he’d lost is helping propel him to better performances this season.
