Rising Stars: A Parent’s Guide to Youth Athletic Development Over-training: Making the pain stop.

In my previous blog I spoke about the dangers of heavy athletic workloads and ways for parents to manage them. One of the results of overloading is over-training. There’s not much research in regards to younger athletes so we must rely on what we’ve learned concerning adult athletes. Generally, the symptoms of over-training are fairly easy to spot. However, with kids they may not exhibit them in the exact same way as an adult. In addition, children are less likely to possess the verbal skills to articulate what is going on with their bodies or emotions to properly alert parents and coaches.  Therefore, parents should be versed on the most common signs and causes and be vigilant in reading their child’s responses to their athletic activities and be ready to respond.

The Signs of Over Training

Physical Symptoms:

  1. Persistent fatigue, low energy.
  2. Complaints of prolonged muscle soreness.
  3. Loss of appetite.
  4. Increase in occurrence of overuse injuries sprains, strains (ankle, knee, elbow, shoulder, back areas).
  5. Frequent colds or infections.

Non-physical Symptoms

  1. Difficulty sleeping.
  2. […]

GS: Andre Ward Crowned Sports Ilustrated Fighter of the Year

The hits keep coming for the Bay Area’s Andre Ward. After winning the Super Six Boxing Classic and consolidating the WBA & WBC Super Middle Weight Titles he has garnered the Sports Illustrated Fighter of the Year Award. He beats out some of boxing’s finest in the likes of  Manny Pacquio and Floyd Maywether.

Ward will likely defend his title next spring or summer possibly against Canadian Lucian Bute. We’ve already spoken and he’ll be back at Gamespeed getting better than ever.

Sports Illustrated: Inside Boxing

By Chris Mannix

There is a certain rhythm to Andre Ward’s game, a musical elegance gifted only to the finest performers. The technical brilliance is there, a product of a 10-year amateur career that culminated with an Olympic gold medal in 2004. There is the strength and power, speed and agility, a perfect blend of skills that have, thus far, made Ward unbeatable at the pro level. He is, as Carl Froch put it on Saturday night, moments after Ward beat him for the Super Six title, “a slippery eel,” hard, if not impossible, to cleanly hit, a fighter without concussive power but, at 168 pounds, physically […]

Football: Callan Bard wins NFL Punt Pass Kick Sectionals

Congratulations to Callan Bard  (Napa) who won the NFL Pepsi, Punt, Pass & Kick Sectionals in Daly City last Saturday and will perform at the beginning of the 49er game next Sunday Dec 4th. This serious gridster is an athlete. He makes the drive on Sundays the day after pop-warner games for private sessions. When most kids are taking the day off playing video games he enjoys working on his receiving skills and speed.  Good luck Cal.

Football: Ray Hudson knows he can get the job done

I love this story about Ray Hudson. The confidence he displays in his ability  is what we like to see in our athletes. Ray spent his off season working with us on his speed and agility, footwork and catching skills and participating in our Saturday Football class led by coach Mike. With all the work he got done I’m not surprised by his answer.

Congrats also go out to his quarterback another GS athlete, Tommy Paulson  a first year varsity QB who will be a force coming next year.

Facing a fourth and goal and trailing by six points with just over a minute to go, Foothill High football coach Matt Sweeney was going to call a fade to the corner of the end zone for junior wide receiver Ray Hudson.

Sweeney then asked his best receiver if he could beat his guy, and Hudson told his coach he could. Then he did, scrapping the fade and catching a ball on a stop pattern just inside the goal line, giving the host Falcons a 14-13 come-from-behind East Bay […]

Football: Monte Vista’s Ryan Neil inspirational story.

What a great story about perserverence and believing in ones self. Ryan has been with GS for seven months working on catching up and has blossomed beautifully. He definitly left no stone unturned working tirelessly on his speed, agility , changing his physique, following proper nutrition and working with a linemen skills coach. He had some great camps this summer and I’m sure will get a DI offer. If given the chance we could be watching this kid in the NFL . Great job Ryan!

The best offensive linemen are always pushing forward. Ryan Neil, an 18-year-old senior guard at Monte Vista High, knows that better than anybody.

He kept pushing forward through a two-year period of his life that very nearly undercut his dream in a sport he so dearly loves.

Growing up, Neil was one of the best multisport athletes in the Danville area, but because of his size, his specialty was football. Now at 6-foot-6 and a well-tapered 280 […]

Getting the most out of a Sports Camp

Getting the most out of a Sports Camp

Posted on June 7, 2011 at 11:17am

Alright, its that time of year. Sports camps of all types will be going on.  Here’s a few tips athletes and parent’s should know to get the most out of the experience. As an instructor of numerous camps over the years here’s some tips from an instructors perspective.

  1. Research your camp thoroughly. Know things like: age range, skill level, number of participant’s, coach to athlete ratio, level of expertise . All of these factor into the level of fun   and quality of instruction.Your athlete should be a “realistic” fit to get the most out of the experience.
  2. Know the cancellation or absentee policy. Things do come up (weather, sickness) and you want to be up to speed on where you stand once you’ve put your money down.

  3. Be equipped properly.  Make sure you have the appropriate attire, footwear etc. Improper footwear on the wrong surface can lead to injuries.  Check the weather to have the right clothing or change of clothing readily available.

  4. Nutrition: Eat properly before the activity, have something to […]
