Gamespeed’s female sprinters off to solid seasons.

Track & Field– Gamespeed track athletes don’t just run, they RACE!. They undergo training that develops the physical, technical and tactical skills needed to perform at the highest levels of competitive track and field. We have a tradition of having some of the top male and female sprinters in the North Coast Section. That tradition is securely in tact with its latest crop of developing athletes. Our speed , power, conditioning  and block training is showing impressive early results.

Chinyere Okoro – The ninth grader from Pleasanton has sped 12.04 PR winning her heat (4th overall) at the Sac State Hornet Invite against collegiate competition and then came back and ran 25.20 for 200m to place 5th overall.

She has also run 12.20 in winning the 100m at the Chabot Invitational again with collegiate competitors and running 24.70 for the 200m win.

Her times would rank her amongst the top 20 at 100m  and top 10 at 200m in the state. Impressive.

Masina Mayo – This ninth grader out of Lafayette, Ca has had impressive runs of 12.59  (14th rank North coast)and 26.00 (9th rank ) for 100m and 200m. With only having three meets she continues to improve and will be one of […]

Gamespeed’s More Meaningful Reach Beyond the Playing Field

matt candau

As coaches on a daily basis we concern ourselves with the goals of our athletes, to get bigger, faster and stronger.  Its easy to forget the other ways we influence those we teach and how we effect them off the playing field.  We seldom think of the ripple effect of our interactions both positive and negative.

I got a very nice message from an former athlete and assistant of mine. Matt  Candau  has been involved with Gamespeed since  2009. He has studied abroad at Roehampton University in England and at the University Queensland in Australia. He is back in southern California completing his practical hours.

His message reminds me  that there are things more meaningful than throwing a 90 mph fastball or running a 4.4, 40 yard dash.

“Hey Arron, I hope all is well. I am writing to you to thank you for everything you have taught me over the years. I never quite knew how valuable the skills you were teaching me were until right about now. Never in a million years would I have thought I would be using your performance techniques with my current patients, but here I […]

Gamespeed’s “College Ready” off season training program paying dividends in season for many athletes..

Summer is coming, that means off season for many collegiate athletes who will come back home to the bay area. Athletes from Pepperdine, Oregon State, UCSD, CAL, UCLA, and many others programs will come back through our doors hungry to get ready for the next season. Below are just a couple of the athletes we see every off season and how that work pays off for them. “College Ready” is a program designed to train collegiate or first time collegiate athletes for the demands of high level athletics. Its not about getting in shape.  Its about performing at the next level where talent is not enough. You need to have a smarter program and outwork your competition. Are you college ready?

Gamespeed’s Andre Ward defends title in Spectacular Fashion!

In a prime time  HBO telecast, Gamespeed trained Andre Ward defended his WBA/WBC Super Middleweight World Champion title. I was there ring side just six rows from the ring (courtesy of Andre). This was a turning point fight demonstrating that he is a marquee fighter who possess the talent, skills, and entertainment factor to be a prime time draw. The fight accomplished all of that and more. Andre showed exceptional speed and power with a jab that Dawson couldn’t evade and two crushing blows that sent him to the canvas twice during the fight.  Two key facets of his fight game that he and trainer Aaron Thigpen have been developing in conditioning workouts since last year prior to his Super Six win over Carl Froch. I also like the fact that his conditioning looked exceptional during the 10th round he notched a TKO but he had the stamina to go well beyond, his legs looked strong, feet light, and posture solid. It was beautiful to see the work we’ve done together live. Congrats Dre’ were proud of you.

“Why Jack & Jill Can’t Run Up the Hill”: Four reasons why youth athletes lack speed.

The next time  you are at a kids game, practice or just at the park note how many kids can’t run. Yes, I said it, can’t run. I’m not talking Olympic sprint technique just basic coordination. Notice the herky -jerky, waddling, shuffling, flailing movements.  It doesn’t take a trained eye to see somethings amiss. Whats missing are basic coordination and balance skills. Running is natural, it’s just that some of us come pre-wired to do it better than others.

The most basic skill in any field or court sport is running. If your child’s abilities are sub par in this most rudimentary athletic skill they will suffer. However, when it comes to speed for sports your now talking the development of a skill.  A skill that can be learned and honed to achieve a competitive standing or even dominance in sport.

Why cant kids run?

Here are my top 4 reasons why athletes today struggle with running.

1. Decline of recreational play activities. The youth of today spend less time playing fun games. Remember dodge ball, kickball, hop scotch, tag. These games taught balance coordination and laid the foundation for the more complex […]
