Coach Thigpen enters race to crown worlds fastest man over age 40.

Those who know me best know above all else I’m a competitor and live for the challenge.  2013 will present one of my best challenges to date. Its a race to crown the world fastest sprinter. Sorry Usain Bolt its for those of us over 40 years old. But were no slouches on average we can all run a 4.4 or better in the 40yard dash. The race is scheduled for March and my trainings been going well for weeks. Including myself we have the top five ranked sprinters in this category. The event has invited the top eighteen. That will mean running a heat to qualify for the final.  This makes it interesting because at our age its not just being fast but staying healthy. It wont be easy I’m seven years older (I’m 48) than my competition in most cases. It will be fun, the venue is at my alma mater of San Diego State. I’ve had one tune up race a month ago, a 60m dash which I won at an all comers meet. Tomorrow I’ll run another tuneup, the 100m at Cal Berkley. I’ll post updates as the the date approaches.

Willie Davenport Olympian Track and Field Clinic

Track & Field Athletes

Coming this Saturday. Meet and work with former Olympians and elite coaches.

This is one of the best clinics in  the Bay area. It is very rare you will see the level of expertise that’s presented at this clinic in such a broad range of events. But just as important as the technical gems are the wisdom and guidance that these former greats use to teach and inspire the attendants. Ive been speaking at this clinic for over 15 years and its always a lot of fun. Its where old school meets new school.

Gamespeed’s Andre Ward defends title in Spectacular Fashion!

In a prime time  HBO telecast, Gamespeed trained Andre Ward defended his WBA/WBC Super Middleweight World Champion title. I was there ring side just six rows from the ring (courtesy of Andre). This was a turning point fight demonstrating that he is a marquee fighter who possess the talent, skills, and entertainment factor to be a prime time draw. The fight accomplished all of that and more. Andre showed exceptional speed and power with a jab that Dawson couldn’t evade and two crushing blows that sent him to the canvas twice during the fight.  Two key facets of his fight game that he and trainer Aaron Thigpen have been developing in conditioning workouts since last year prior to his Super Six win over Carl Froch. I also like the fact that his conditioning looked exceptional during the 10th round he notched a TKO but he had the stamina to go well beyond, his legs looked strong, feet light, and posture solid. It was beautiful to see the work we’ve done together live. Congrats Dre’ were proud of you.

Gamespeed’s Andre Ward upcoming title fight.

Come support the pride of Oakland and Gamespeed’s own Andre Ward. He will defend his title against Chad Dawson September 8th at the Oracle Arena in Oakland. It will also air on HBO. Andre’s been training privately with GS owner Aaron Thigpen for over a year in which we’ve seen him win the Super 7 Championship. Watch this athlete bring his tenacious  and determined work ethic into the ring.

On September 8 live on HBO from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., Andre Ward will defend his super middleweight crown against current top light heavyweight Chad Dawson, in a meeting of top American fighters. Ward discusses the matchup and what he expects from Dawson below.

* * * * *

What is Dawson’s most dangerous attribute as a fighter? How are you preparing for this fight? Is there any one aspect of Dawson’s game that concerns you most, or that you’ve focused on more than any other during training?

“I cannot identify what Chad’s greatest attribute as a fighter is yet because I have not fought him so that remains to be seen. There is not one thing that’s […]

Rising Stars: A Parent’s Guide to Youth Athletic Development Over-training: Making the pain stop.

In my previous blog I spoke about the dangers of heavy athletic workloads and ways for parents to manage them. One of the results of overloading is over-training. There’s not much research in regards to younger athletes so we must rely on what we’ve learned concerning adult athletes. Generally, the symptoms of over-training are fairly easy to spot. However, with kids they may not exhibit them in the exact same way as an adult. In addition, children are less likely to possess the verbal skills to articulate what is going on with their bodies or emotions to properly alert parents and coaches.  Therefore, parents should be versed on the most common signs and causes and be vigilant in reading their child’s responses to their athletic activities and be ready to respond.

The Signs of Over Training

Physical Symptoms:

  1. Persistent fatigue, low energy.
  2. Complaints of prolonged muscle soreness.
  3. Loss of appetite.
  4. Increase in occurrence of overuse injuries sprains, strains (ankle, knee, elbow, shoulder, back areas).
  5. Frequent colds or infections.

Non-physical Symptoms

  1. Difficulty sleeping.
  2. […]

Rising Stars: A Parents Guide to Youth Athletic Development

Do you have a young athlete? Rising Stars is a series of topics providing some advice and insight to parents about today’s youth sports culture.

Too Much of A Good Thing

In my eighteen years as a performance trainer I’ve observed the evolution of youth sports. Gone are the days of my youth when athletic outlets were simple neighborhood youth leagues, “rec” leagues, Boys & Girls clubs or the YMCA.  Nowadays, for lack of a better term it has gotten “hardcore”.  Parents must learn how to navigate the new landscape of youth sports if their athletes are to participate, enjoy and excel.

This is the first in a series of articles where I will be sharing the same knowledge and advice I give my clients at Gamespeed  in the hopes of keeping our young athletes safe and successful.  Feel free to post comments or share your stories.

In recent years it has become increasingly acceptable for young athletes to participate in “high level” athletic, sporting and training activities. Travel teams, select clubs, showcases, tournaments, and performance training programs are a regular part of a young athlete’s life.  Couple this  with a “more is better” […]

Track: Coach Aaron defends national sprint title, runner up in Long Jump

Bloomington, Indiana

Last weekend I competed in the Masters Indoor National Championships. To keep it brief:

1st place 60m dash 7.10

Happy with my performance but still dealing with Anterior tendonosis (runner’s ankle). Getting it under control but painful to run. Had an excellent start and accelerated well. Bodes good for outdoor 100m races. Keeps my unbeaten streak alive for 60m five years and running.

2nd place Long Jump 6.05 m

Honestly jumped like a rookie. First jump was best then downhill. Jammed my leg on third attempt and leg was dead thereafter but wanted to take all my jumps. Saving grace was I hit the board 4 out of 6 times. A major improvement for me. Yeah! Hope to take jumps at full speed in my next competition.

All in all a success and only came back bruised but not beaten!

Track: GS Athletes perfrom well in first All Comers Meet of the year

Cal Berkeley Saturday Jan 14th.

A few Gamespeed athletes competed in the first Cal Berkeley track meet of the season.  In track a good preseason regiment is probably the most important part of having a successful season. It can ensure a higher level of performance , reduce the risk of injury, and allow you to hone valuable racing skill.  Most of these athletes have been working hard for the past couple of months and its showing in their performances.

The Results:

Trevor Holmgren (San Ramon): 400m 51.92  Won his heat of the 400m with a time that is one full second better than his opening time a year ago.  A huge improvement.  He was the second fastest high school athlete overall.  He later competed in the 4x800m relay with his SRV teammates.

Annie Geasa (Foothill): 400m  65.84.  In her debut in the 400m Annie did’nt know what to expect but executed a solid run placing 3rd in her heat. An 800m runner a solid 400 time bodes well for a big drop in the 800m. Her times will only get better and it looks like she may have found a second event.

Karra Gardin (Moreau): […]
